Hill Alien AbductionBarney and Betty Had a UFO Encounter in September, 1961
This archetypal New Hampshire case received a lot of exposure, attracting believers, scientists, and skeptics after it happened. It's still controversial.
Widespread publicity was given to the Hill abduction case. This was, most likely, the premiere classical example and was the first in which the beings were, later, identified by an astronomical investigation, as having extraterrestrial origin. The Hill AbductionBarney and Betty Hill of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, were driving on US Route 3 near Lancaster, as they traveled home from a Canadian vacation. It was then that they saw a light moving in the sky. They would periodically stop and check on the unusual light that seemed to fly erratically. They drove on towards the White Mountains and saw the object grew much larger, following a parallel course to their car. As they approached Indian Head, the light appeared directly ahead of them. Barney left the engine running and got out of the car to watch the extraordinary object. He saw what he described as 5 to 11 figures moving behind the craft’s double-rows of windows. Betty watched her husband from inside the car and heard him say he didn’t believe it! She wasn’t able to see the figures or the UFO’s descent. The object was now approximately 70-feet overhead and about 100-feet away when Barney ran back to the car and say that they’re going to capture them. He got into the car and raced away. They heard a loud beeping sound similar to a tuning fork, then felt very drowsy. When they awoke, they were driving near Ashland, two hours later. The city’s a twenty or thirty minute drive from where they had been. They felt uneasy and confused about the missing two hours. The following day, they reported the incident to Pease Air Force Base officials. A few days later, an investigator from the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) documented their stories. Hill’s Alien Abduction After-EffectsWithin ten days of the incident, Betty began having recurring nightmares in which 8 to 11 beings would stop their car. They would be taken into a disk-shaped craft and examined. Continual anxiety led both Hills to seek the help of Dr. Benjamin Simon, a psychiatrist who specialized in treating amnesia through time regression hypnotherapy. Treatment lasted for six months, revealing many details of their encounter. The aspects in which both Hills described their ordeal matched closely. Betty, under posthypnotic suggestion, was able to draw a star map detailing the origin of their abductors, which was not to be documented for some years. An astronomical investigation, based on information that was unknown in 1961, produced a controversial match between Betty's drawing and a cluster of previously unknown stars near two others, Zeta Reticuli. The Skeptics Rebut the Hill’s Alien AbductionBetty and Barney claim they were abducted on September 19, 1961. Betty first remembered her abduction during the series of nightmares. She took people to the alien landing site. Only she could see the aliens and their UFO. The Hills recalled most of their story under hypnosis a few years later. Barney said the aliens had wraparound eyes. Twelve days earlier, in 1961, an episode of The Outer Limits featured a Sci-Fi story about such an alien. There was a story about alien abductions in a 1930 comic adventure, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Later, others have claimed to be abducted. As with the Hills, generally, there’s amnesia following the alleged encounter, followed by hypnosis, counseling or psychotherapy in which there’s the recollection of the abduction, which frequently includes recollections of experimentation on the subjects who were abducted.
